History of the breed. To the northwest of Phoenix, near the center of Arizona, there is an area that rises from the desert to the Bradshaw Mountains. In 1940, Francis Norwood Bard came here to create a herd of cows that could survive in harsh conditions. He bought bulls from King Ranch and purebred Herefords and crossed them with Afrikaners. After World War II, he began breeding cattle. In 1945, Bard hired Elliott C. Humphrey to manage the breeding program. They wanted to create a breed that would produce a lot of meat with a small number of cows. Humphrey studied the vegetation, climate, and terrain, while Bard focused on the weather. The weather conditions varied: droughts, rains, and snow in the mountains. Bard and Humphrey decided that the cows should be hardy, fertile, have good instincts, produce milk, possess aggressive habits, and have legs and feet capable of navigating difficult terrain, utilize forages, have wild habits, calve easily, withstand heat, be resistant to insects, and be of medium size. They concluded that they could create such characteristics by mixing the genes of different breeds. The Barzona breed was created from breeds such as Hereford, Angus, Afrikaner, and Santa Gertrudis. It was developed based on Hereford cows and daughters from crossing with Afrikaners. From Hereford, they aimed for early maturity, strong hindquarters, thick skin, and the ability to thrive on pasture. From Angus, they sought good carcass traits, marbling, small calves at birth, fatty milk, and strong hindquarters. From Afrikaner, they wanted good milk production, utilization of forages, small calves at birth, skin pigmentation, a coat suitable for heat and insects, thick skin, body depth, and marbling genes without excess fat on the back. Santa Gertrudis bulls were chosen for their Shorthorn genes. After 1955, no blood from other breeds was added to the herd. By 1968, the Barzona breed was recognized as genetically established. Bulls of this breed were in demand among commercial cattlemen for crossbreeding. The need for an organization to protect the interests of Barzona breeders became evident. In January 1968, the Barzona Cattle Breeders Association of America was founded in Phoenix, Arizona. Francis Bard, one of the founders of the association, passed away in January 1970.
